Abstract

Introduction: Palatal defects may occur due to congenital or acquired factors. Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by mucoralean fungi that proliferate and destroy tissues. Maxillofacial prosthodontics focuses on restoring these defects through the fabrication of an obturator prosthesis.
Case presentation: A 72-year-old female patient requested prosthetic rehabilitation, reporting partial loss of the palate due to mucormycosis. After confirming favorable conditions, an obturator prosthesis was fabricated. Initial impressions were taken, a transitional prosthesis was fabricated, custom trays and record bases were made, wax rims were constructed, and vertical dimension was determined for articulation. Occlusion was then verified, a final impression was taken, and the prosthesis was processed in acrylic resin.
Discussion: Surgical removal of palatal tumors affects the patient’s quality of life; fabrication of an obturator prosthesis helps restore these functions.
Conclusions: It was possible to fabricate an obturator prosthesis with favorable outcomes.
