Abstract

The Buccal Bifurcation Cyst (BBC) is a rare inflammatory cystic lesion that primarily affects children between 6 and 14 years of age, involving the buccal aspect of the first or second permanent mandibular molar and accounting for approximately 3% of all cystic lesions of the mandible. It is commonly diagnosed through routine two-dimensional imaging examinations, with definitive diagnosis confirmed only by histopathological analysis. The aim of this literature review was to demonstrate how three-dimensional radiographic examinations, particularly cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), can assist in the accurate diagnosis of BBC, as well as contribute to appropriate treatment planning and management. Knowledge of the characteristic features of BBC is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment selection, reinforcing the importance of correlating clinical and radiographic findings and highlighting the role of CBCT in preventing inappropriate therapeutic approaches.
