Bifphosphonates (BF's) are a class of drugs used in the treatment of various diseases, including malignant tumors and lytic pathologies that contribute to the appearance of adverse effects such as bone lesions in patients who have already made or made use of these drugs. In addition, patients with dental infections and periodontal diseases have an increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaws induced by BF's. The present work aims to point out the relationship between the use of oral and intravenous BF's with the appearance of osteonecrosis of the maxillomandibular complex using studies present in the literature. Scientific publications nationwide and internationally of the search sites Google Acadêmico, BBO, SciELO, Lilacs and PubMed were included. It is known that osteonecrosis has its emergence after dental interventions, such as surgical procedures, implants and poorly adapted prosthesis, and that it is very important the multidisciplinary work between physicians and dentists to directly contribute to the knowledge about the adverse effects that the drug brings, since early diagnosis helps in the treatment of this pathology that is considered challenging. It was concluded from the research that intravenous bf administration has higher relationships with the onset of osteonecrosis than the oral route, due to its greater absorption.
